Meet Emma Hill – Risk & Business Improvement Manager
“The sky is the limit!” That’s the career advice from BCS staff member Emma Hill, who is very well positioned to comment on forging a meaningful career path within the organisation.
Emma began working with BCS in 1987 as a Care Service Employee, when just out of school. Twenty years on, she is now in a senior management role with the organisation. Emma is a great example of the career track that BCS can offer passionate and committed staff members.
The following is an extract from the Winter 2008 edition of the BCS magazine Trust, in which Emma chats with BCS Community Relations Manager Scott Pilgrim.
Scott: So the sky’s the limit you say?
Emma: Yes, there really are so many opportunities with BCS if you are committed and prepared to work hard to reach your goals. It takes career development seriously and I have greatly valued all the opportunities that I have been given.
Scott: Tell us about your career track at BCS?
Emma: I started as a CSE at the BCS Yallambi Centre at Carlingford in 1987 and then went on to complete my nursing studies. I have worked as a registered nurse, care manager, OHS manager, education consultant, aged and community care consultant and in strategic projects.
Scott: What have you most enjoyed about working with BCS?
Emma: I enjoy working for a Christian organisation that enhances people’s lives. I value working with our clients and their families to achieve good outcomes. I enjoy the great BCS team and the opportunities for career development.
Scott: How do you engage with BCS’ mission and values in your day to day working life?
Emma: Working within the BCS mission and values is something I am very committed to and strive to achieve in everything I do. Our mission and values gives us a good point of reference on a daily basis for why we do what we do and the type of organisation we want to be ….
They set a high bar for us, but that is a good thing if we are going to meet our clients’ expectations on the level of quality care we will deliver. That ought to be our goal on a daily basis.
Scott: What makes you tick?
Emma: Identifying a problem and working with a team to resolve it in a positive manner, which ensures good client outcomes …. seeing clients and families comfortable and happy with our service delivery is my ultimate goal each day. I also want to do all I can to ensure that my dedicated and hard working staff across Northern Sydney have the necessary frameworks to deliver excellence in Christian care to our clients.
Scott: Where do you see BCS in ten years?
I see BCS continuing to grow as a passionate and innovative care provider. I think we will continually be working on our strong foundations to provide excellence in Christian care and improve the way we do this and how we deliver this care.
Age care will remain our focus but I see us meeting an increasing number of other unmet needs in our local communities …. We have so much potential and there are so many opportunities. It’s a challenging but exciting time to be working for a care provider like BCS.
Scott: What other advice would you have for someone starting their career track now with BCS or contemplating working for BCS?
Emma: To those contemplating, definitely follow through and look at the different career streams available at BCS. There are great opportunities. And to those just starting, my advice would be never lose sight of the client as your key focus … be client-focused in all you do … treat your clients like you would want someone to treat your family members.
